The types of tenancy we offer are explained below:
If you have not had a tenancy with a local council or housing association before, we will give you a 12 month starter tenancy. This may be either a Probationary fixed term tenancy, if your home is let through Affordable Rent, or an Assured shorthold starter tenancy.
During your first 12 months, we will offer support to help you live in your home and keep to the conditions of your tenancy.
If all goes well, at the end of the year we will give you one of the following full tenancies. But if there are any problems, we may extend your probationary period by up to six months or you could lose your home.
These are for properties let through Affordable Rent. They are usually renewable after five years (or for new tenancies from April 2018 10 years), unless:
This type of tenancy allows you to stay in your home for as long as you want, providing you keep to the terms of your tenancy agreement.
We will only end your tenancy if it is unsafe for you to stay in your home or if you break your agreement. You can only be evicted from your home if a court decides it is reasonable for us to take back the property and issues a court order.
You will only have this type of tenancy agreement if you started your tenancy before 15 January 1989. It gives you the right to live in your home for as long as you want, providing you keep to the terms of your tenancy agreement.
