Platform Housing Group has announced that it will scrap fixed term tenancies for all of its customers in favour of lifetime tenancies.
The initiative was approved by our Board towards the end of last year with the change taking effect from the beginning of 2020.
Fixed term tenancies were first introduced in 2011 as part of the Localism Act from the same year, the aim of which was to give landlords more flexibility. The agreements, which usually last around five years, allow landlords to decide whether or not to renew a tenancy after that period. The move will see all fixed term tenancies become lifetime ones with no further fixed term tenancies issued to customers; a programme of consultation and implementation is already underway.
Marion Duffy, Group Regional Operations Director (East) at Platform Housing Group said : “Giving our customers the security of a home for life is at the heart of our decision to introduce lifetime tenancies. Fixed term tenancies often caused uncertainty for customers and, as part of our drive to continue to develop robust and sustainable communities, we welcome this move.”
